What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry refers to the use of medically induced relaxation techniques during dental procedures. Sedation can be taken as an oral medication or inhaled through a mask worn over the nose. It is commonly used for patients of all ages when necessary or appropriate.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry provides a variety of benefits:

  • Eases dental anxiety. Sedation can ease anxiety for patients who are nervous about going to the dentist or having dental work done.
  • Helps long procedures seem shorter. Complex, lengthy procedures can seem shorter for the patient while under sedation.
  • Reduces the amount of local anesthesia needed. Sedation can make invasive procedures more tolerable, often needing less local anesthesia.
  • Relieves stress. Sedation dentistry can relieve the stress associated with dental procedures for patients as well as parents and caregivers.

Sedation Options We Offer

We provide the following types of sedation for dental procedures:

  • Nitrous Oxide / Laughing Gas. Nitrous oxide, sometimes called laughing gas, is a specially formulated blend of gasses that the patient breathes in through a mask worn over the nose. It provides a calm, euphoric feeling that can help patients feel more relaxed.
  • Conscious Oral Sedation. An oral sedative can be prescribed in pill or liquid form that the patient can take before the procedure. It provides a calm, sometimes sleepy feeling, but the patient remains fully conscious.

Are You A Good Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

If you or a loved one feel nervous or anxious about an upcoming dental procedure, sedation may be a worthwhile option to consider. Children who are fearful about getting a filling or an extraction may benefit from either nitrous oxide or conscious oral sedation. Patients with dental anxiety are good candidates for sedation dentistry, as they can eliminate, or temporarily separate from, the fear associated with going to the dentist.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sedation Dentistry

Why is nitrous oxide called “laughing gas”?
The term “laughing gas” comes from the rare cases that occur with a small percentage of people who giggle or laugh while breathing nitrous oxide. Most people simply feel calm and relaxed, with a tingling feeling in their fingers and toes.
How long does it take for the effects of sedation to wear off?
Nitrous oxide wears off in a matter of seconds or minutes after breathing regular, oxygenated air. An oral sedative may take a few hours to wear off after you get home from the dentist’s office. You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment if you have taken an oral sedative, but not with nitrous oxide.
Will sedation dentistry put me to sleep?
The sedation options we offer, both nitrous oxide and conscious oral sedation, allow you to remain completely awake, but less aware of what is going on around you. You don’t go to sleep and you won’t be unconscious.
Is sedation dentistry safe?
Sedation dentistry is safe for most patients. However, if you have any medical concerns that may make it unsafe for you to undergo sedation, you should have the approval of your primary care physician before your procedure.
Can you be too young or too old for sedation dentistry?
Nitrous oxide sedation is safe and effective for patients at any age in most cases. Conscious oral sedation is typically not used in our office for pediatric patients due to differences in the development of the airway in children. If you have any concerns, consult with your primary care physician before undergoing sedation of any kind. For very young children or for elderly patients, approval from your pediatrician or physician is recommended.
